Water is an essential resource and one of the most sensitive to climate change. Wastewater management and water efficiency are critical components for safeguarding human health, ecosystems, agriculture, and overall sustainability.
Rapid urbanization, population growth, and climate change pressures (droughts, floods) stress freshwater resources. Wastewater is often discharged untreated, polluting rivers, lakes, and groundwater. Inefficient water use, leaks in supply systems, outdated irrigation practices, and lack of infrastructure magnify scarcity and health risks.
Our Approach
Climate Change Hub works to promote water‐sensitive planning, support the design and construction of wastewater treatment and reuse systems, and advance technologies for efficient water use in agriculture, industry, and domestic settings. We partner with municipalities to upgrade infrastructure, facilitate water recycling, rainwater harvesting, grey water reuse, leak detection and repair, and promote conservation measures. We engage stakeholders from community to government level to craft policies and practices that ensure equitable access to clean water and sanitation.
Impact & Opportunities
Effective wastewater management and greater water efficiency improve public health by reducing contamination and disease, protect ecosystems, reduce pressure on freshwater sources during droughts, and help agriculture maintain productivity. Opportunities include adopting nature‐based solutions (wetlands, constructed ecological buffers), using smart monitoring and metering technologies, integrating wastewater reuse into circular systems, and securing finance for water infrastructure. Improved water governance, supported by policy frameworks and community participation, will ensure sustainable outcomes.
